Head Count

Breakable Toy

Players at Adventure Games Paintball can create an account and see a list of upcoming events. Players can view the details of an event, including the weather forecast for the given day using the Weather.gov API. Players can check in for an event providing an estimated time of arrival, as well as seeing other players who are attending the event.

Paintball has been a huge hobby of mine since I began playing in middle school. I play on a team that competes in national speedball (format of paintball) tournaments, and our home field is Adventure Games Paintball in Weare, NH. Adventure Games has a large Facebook players group, where players often make posts saying, "I'm going to be there Sunday playing all day, who else is in?". The primary goal of Head Count is to better the current system of Facebook group posts.

Every Day Is A Holiday

Share your opinion and see other's on a variety of Holidays.

The task being to build a review website as a group. My group decided it would be a fun to review different holidays, as everyone has their own opinions.

Get to know Aaron Mitchell

What are you looking for in your next role?

I am looking for a job that is challenging with a team that appreciates my background. On the one hand, I can offer a good foundation in modern web technologies like React, Node, and database. But at the same time, I am looking for mentorship and guidance in my next role. This is especially important to me being my first position in the tech industry.

Why did you decide to change career and/or educational paths? What was your prior path and how did you end up down that road initially?

Before attending Launch Academy I was studying computer science at a technical college in Vermont. After taking a couple programming classes in high school I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in the tech industry. I completed 3 semesters of college and decided that I would like to learn using a more practical and hands on approach. I wanted to learn the most relevant technologies in a highly collaborative environment, and Launch Academy felt like a perfect fit.

Where have you been involved in the tech community (events attended, volunteer activities, etc.)?

I have not yet gotten involved in the tech community, however I plan to attend networking events to meet entrepreneurs, startups, and thinkers in the local Boston tech community. Code for Boston has peaked my interest as a community to join post Launch Academy graduation.

What has been the most fulfilling aspect of your journey towards becoming a web developer? What's been your biggest challenge and how have you overcome it?

The most fulfilling part of my journey as a web developer has been the excitement I get from learning a new technology with my peers. This is fulfilling because beginning to learn a new language, framework, concept, etc. can be intimidating to approach, but within a matter of days we all come a long way in our understanding. My biggest technical challenge I face is not decomposing a larger problem into many smaller and more solvable problems. Sometimes I overestimate my ability to solve a problem in one go, rather than going step by step. To overcome this challenge I have made it habit to ask myself, "what is my next step?". If I cannot clearly answer this question in one sentence then I know I need to break the problem down into more steps.

If you had an unlimited budget and resources, what would you build?

If I had an unlimited budget and resources I would build a micro home community for the homeless in Boston. Helping the less fortunate in our local area is a problem I feel most passionate about. This would look like a group of small/efficient shelters. The micro home would be a mininmal space, but a safe space nonetheless. My reason for choosing this is since moving to Boston the homeless in my community became more evident to me. I also love to use web tools to design small and space effiencent homes. If I had an unlimited budget and resources I could build these homes to help those in my local community who need a safe shelter.
