Get to know Bob Nelson

What are you looking for in your next role?

A company with real, unmanufactured culture. A team that fosters mentorship, independent thinking, and open dialogue.

Why did you decide to change career and/or educational paths? What was your prior path and how did you end up down that road initially?

I worked at software companies in implementations/presales positions for almost 10 years and the problem solving nature of web development always appealed to me. I wanted to learn to code but was convinced that it was beyond my abilities. At my last job, a few senior devs persuaded me to believe in myself. When I was laid off in late '22, I took the leap and joined Launch.

Where have you been involved in the tech community (events attended, volunteer activities, etc.)?

What has been the most fulfilling aspect of your journey towards becoming a web developer? What's been your biggest challenge and how have you overcome it?

Proving to myself that I can learn and implement a programming language. JQuery selecting of DOM elements has proven to be the most difficult challenge for me. I've found that the best way to overcome this is to setup good console outputs and to trial and error until the element I want is returned.

If you had an unlimited budget and resources, what would you build?

A golf simulator/bar/PC battlestation. I'm addicted to Golf and can't play it in the winter - my own personal simulator would be a dream and having a bar next to it would be heaven. If I threw a gaming setup into the mix for hotseating(heroes 3 or multiplayer starcraft), I'd have achieved Nirvana.
