What are you looking for in your next role?
Having never worked in the tech industry, I have a hard time visualizing what a role encompasses. I would say that it is important to me to find a company with a healthy learning environment. I believe I can learn quickly and I love teaching others. When I help another student/coworker understand new concepts, it also helps me gain a greater familiarity with the subjects as well. I am an outgoing and naturally inquisitive person. I would be excited to find myself in a team who share my excitement and respect!
Why did you decide to change career and/or educational paths? What was your prior path and how did you end up down that road initially?
In my 20’s, the service industry offered me a schedule that allowed me to ski/bike during the day and work at night. As I got older and injuries amounted, I began looking for a career elsewhere. In addition, concepts that had at one time not interested me, such as PTO and job security, started to become more of a priority. Over the last few years, I began researching the tech industry, and started taking classes on edX and Codecademy. A family friend recommended that I look into Launch Academy, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the material in the class. I believe my years as a bartender and restaurant manager gave me many skills that will allow me to transition well into the team-oriented industry of Full-Stack development. I love puzzles and the gratification of solving a problem. This industry is a very exciting field where I can continue to learn and grow..
Where have you been involved in the tech community (events attended, volunteer activities, etc.)?
I haven’t yet been involved in the tech industry.
What has been the most fulfilling aspect of your journey towards becoming a web developer? What's been your biggest challenge and how have you overcome it?
I have really enjoyed the React and CSS parts of the program. It is very satisfying to see information aesthetically rendered to the web-page. The hardest concepts for me to grasp have been using the routers. It is still a work in progress but following the paths through the fetch and get requests has made me far more comfortable with the material.
If you had an unlimited budget and resources, what would you build?
As an avid scuba diver, I have been disheartened to see the state of reefs and oceans around the globe. Whether diving in the Caribbean or South China Sea, coral fields are bleaching and currents bring in massive amounts of plastic and debris. With an unlimited budget, I would form a team to create technology to curb the decimation of these habitats.
